the hazard for the individual cigarette smoker (half will eventually
be killed by smoking if they continue; stopping works)
- summarises some
epidemiological evidence that demonstrates those hazards (particularly
Richard Doll’s 50-year study of smoking and death
in British doctors)
- shows the effects of widespread cessation on national
mortality rates in an entire country (the UK, which used to have the
worst death rates in the world from smoking, but has in recent decades
had the best decrease in the world in deaths from smoking
- contrasts
the UK trends in deaths from smoking with the Polish trends (though
the choice of comparator countries could vary by selecting slides from
the country PPTs)
